What is ballast used for?
Ballast is commonly used in various building applications and is made from a special blend of materials. It can be used as-is or mixed with other substances. Typically, ballast is combined with water and other aggregates to create a much stronger material.
What types of ballast do we supply?
We offer a high-quality 20mm ballast and a ballast-and-sand mix, both available for immediate supply, making them perfect for projects of any scale. Our ballast mix consists of a coarse, angular blend of crushed stone, gravel, and sand. This versatile mix is ideal for various landscaping applications, such as shed bases, path edges, and secured fence posts.

Can you lay slabs on ballast?
Ballast serves as an excellent base for paving slabs due to its composition of gravel and sand, which provides good drainage and stability. When used alone, ballast can create a solid foundation that helps prevent shifting and settling over time.
For enhanced strength, you can mix ballast with cement to create a concrete mix. This combination results in a more stable and durable base for patio slabs, offering increased resistance to weathering and load. A concrete mix allows for a smoother surface and can help ensure that your paving slabs remain firmly in place, reducing the risk of cracks and unevenness in the long run.
When preparing the base, ensure that the ballast is compacted properly and level before laying the paving slabs, as this will contribute to the longevity and appearance of your patio.
Does more ballast make concrete stronger?
The strength of concrete is influenced by the ratio of ballast to cement used in the mix. A mix with a 1:5 ratio of cement to ballast is typically suitable for creating slabs, while a 1:8 ratio is recommended for producing stronger concrete intended for foundations. Additionally, using heavier ballast can further enhance the strength of the concrete.
