MOT Type 1 coverage calculator

Our MOT Type 1 coverage calculator is designed to help you determine the quantity of MOT Type 1 aggregate required for your construction project. To calculate the quantity of MOT needed, ensure that you take into account the intended use of the surface, which will help determine the depth of your MOT layer. Here are a few common depths which are usually measured in millimetres: Patios & Footpaths – 50mm Depth / Driveways – 100mm Depth / Roads or Heavier use areas – 150mm+ Depth

To begin, select “Type 1 MOT” as the material and input the dimensions in meters. The calculator will then display the quantity of material needed in clear, bright green fields, showing the amount of MOT Type 1 required in both cubic meters and tons. This way, you’ll know exactly how much material to order.

Tip: To use our calculator, make sure you convert millimetres to meters: 100 mm = 0.1 m. We also recommend ordering 5–10% extra to account for compaction and material variation.

MOT Type 1 AGGREGATE

We offer a diverse selection of MOT Type 1 aggregate, which serves as an essential formation material for filling irregularities in excavations. This ensures a solid and level foundation, perfectly suited for load-bearing surfaces like stone or concrete.

In the construction sector, we provide MOT Type 1 aggregate and recycled hardcore aggregate in bulk, catering to a variety of infrastructure and building applications. Our products are competitively priced and known for their versatility.

For the domestic market, we supply MOT Type 1 aggregate and recycled hardcore aggregate to support a wide range of DIY projects. Whether you’re laying a sub-base for sheds, patios, driveways, or other applications, we have the right materials to meet your needs.

Applications of MOT Type 1

MOT Type 1 is crucial in various construction scenarios where certified materials are necessary. Its exceptional properties make it ideal for applications, especially in environments that require a stable and durable sub-base. Common uses include:

  • Driveways
  • Building Sub-bases
  • Hard Standings
  • Highways
  • Car Parks
  • Footpaths

Composition of MOT Type 1

MOT Type 1 is a high-quality sub-base material commonly used in construction and civil engineering projects. It is typically made up of a blend of aggregates derived from:

Granite: Known for its durability and strength, granite provides excellent load-bearing properties to the mixture.

Limestone: This material is valued for its smooth texture and natural binding capabilities, enhancing the overall stability of the aggregate.

Clean Crushed Concrete: Recycled concrete contributes to the eco-friendliness of the material while retaining good compaction qualities.

These aggregates are processed to a maximum size of 40mm, resulting in a well-graded aggregate that optimises compaction properties and achieves substantial load-bearing strengths. The dust content generated during the crushing process helps fill voids in the larger aggregates, ensuring a dense and stable base.

How do I work out the MOT Type1 coverage if the area is not a square or rectangle?

If the area you’re working with isn’t a straightforward square or rectangle, the easiest way to calculate the area is to divide it into manageable block shapes. Calculate the volume for each, and then add them together to get the total area of the complex shape.

By using this method, you can simplify the process of calculating areas for intricate designs.

Is MOT Type 1 suitable for driveway sub-bases?

Yes, MOT Type 1 is an excellent choice for driveway sub-bases when the final surface is either gravel or tarmac. However, for block-paved driveways, a more permeable sub-base, such as MOT Type 3, may be necessary to meet Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) regulations.

One of its key features is its ability to resist frost heave, making it particularly suitable for areas prone to freezing temperatures. This resistance helps maintain the stability and longevity of road and driveway surfaces, reducing the likelihood of cracks and other structural issues.

What Are the Specifications for MOT Type 1?

MOT Type 1 is produced in accordance with the Specification for Highways Works Clause 803, ensuring that it meets rigorous standards for performance and durability.
